Let’s start this off by saying that no one is perfect. We are all doing our best to care for our families the best that we know how! As I started doing research about what is in products these days I decided it was time to try to start making cleaner choices for my family. Does this mean my whole entire life is clean and nontoxic? No. But like I said, I’m just doing my best! This is an ongoing journey and one that I am still very much on. If you came into my house you would probably find many things that aren’t 100% clean, so let’s just say that I would be the last one to judge your home!
My journey began when I was pregnant with my first daughter. Pregnancy is so amazing and those motherly instincts kick in right away! I realized that I wasn’t just taking care of my body, but also the little one growing inside of me. I started becoming more interested in cleaner products, organic foods and just watching more closely what I was using each and every day on myself, our girls and in our home.
I tend to be an all or nothing kind of gal, so my first gut reaction when I started doing research was to throw out everything in my house and start fresh. Thankfully I quickly gathered myself and decided it would be best to do this process in phases because 1) it’s not always cheap to go clean, and 2) it can be very overwhelming.
One of the first choices I made was to switch out my everyday cleaning products. The idea of my babies crawling on floors that had been cleaned with toxic chemicals, licking windows and putting everything in their mouths made me make that change first. I reached out to my sweet friend, Kristen Suppa (@well.balanced.home) with Young Living and asked her what products she had for me. Thieves Household Cleaner is what she recommended and I now use it for (almost) every surface in my home. It’s one bottle of concentrate that lasts me at least 6 months. It’s not only saving me money, but also the hassle of storing a million different cleaning supplies in my home. Plus it smells amazing!
My next area that I wanted to switch over was the products that I use on my girls everyday. I noticed pretty early on that my daughters have sensitive skin so I wanted to make sure what I was using on them wasn’t going to irritate them or be unsafe on their growing bodies.
The last several months I have been working on switching over my skincare and makeup. I have tried many brands and have fallen in love with Beautycounter products and their mission (more on that in another post)!
All this to say, it’s a journey! It takes time and a lot of research and effort to make the switch, but it’s been a fun one! Will it ever be perfect? No. But, I’m a believer in balance and doing the best we can!
