“Create the life you always dreamed of.” “Do what makes you happy.” “Listen to your heart.” “Chase your dreams.”
Have you heard these messages before? They’re being thrown at me on Instagram every time I scroll and see another “girl boss” working her online business and doing her thing. I’m in no way saying that any of these phrases are sinful, but as a believer, I think it’s important to guard myself from these sorts of self-power filled messages.
It makes me think for a second that I am capable of anything and that I don’t need Jesus. If I have a “dream” of a life I want that it’s in my power to create it and that nothing bad will happen because, well, I created it, right? If I follow the perfect morning routine I just watched then my day should go seamlessly. If I work out and look exactly like that girl then I should be as happy as she is and I can take on the world like she supposedly is.
We must be careful. These messages aren’t wrong in and of themselves, but as a believer, I don’t want to be a part of the “perfect Instagram life” of chasing dreams and building my own empire.
Give me Jesus. I want to live a life that glorifies HIM first and foremost. I want to create opportunities to share His love with others and serve others. My life is not my own. I want to honor Him with my life and do what makes Him happy. I want to listen to the Holy Spirit’s voice and not my heart. My heart has deceived me time and time again. I want to live my life chasing Jesus and all that He has for me, not what I’ve dreamt up in my head. He is good! He is faithful and His way is the only way to LIFE!
